Student Success Mentor Program
Purpose:
The First Year Experience is a crucial time in which students learn to be independent and begin the development process. Almost all students reach this time period with few, if any of the skills required to succeed both academically and socially. While the Higher Education system has developed and changed dramatically over the last few decades to meet this need, the resources for a successful transition are still too few and too underdeveloped to meet the need of the competitive nature of Undergraduate Student Development. The Student Success Mentor Program, i.e. First Year Experience was developed to bring individuals who have experience in the Higher Education system together with First Year Students to help them with this transition and provide them the personal support that an overwhelmed system can not. This program was developed to focus on the individual, not large cohorts.
Core Values:
•Multiculturalism and Cultural Competence
•Learning and Academic Success
•Character Development & Self Exploration
•Community & Personal Responsibility
•Personal Health, Well-Being & Safety
•Civic Engagement
•Network & Growth
The Program has three stages:
Part 1 - The First Six Weeks
Part 2 - The Tools to Student Success
Part 3 - Education beyond the 4.0
Program Structure:
The Student Success Mentor Program has three stages, Introduction to Higher Education, Skills & Student Development, and Success beyond 4.0. The program starts with the first six weeks of a student’s introduction to their University or College and serves as a support tool to provide them with access and tools that will introduce them to their new environment both academically and socially, which will require them to actively seek out Resources and Knowledge they may not discover till much later if ever during their undergraduate experience. Stage two involves an interactive two-part class that is offered both via the internet and in traditional classroom setting that will help the student develop their study skills, time management and more. The Last stage looks at the student’s success beyond their grade point average; this helps them develop as an individual and provides them with the tools for successful Networking & Growth which leads to greater opportunities both in their undergraduate career and beyond. This system places the student in a direct one to one relationship with a mentor so that the student can have easy and open access to professional staff who have experience both academically and professional in higher education.
